I don’t think I’m the first person to blog about the Grand Canyon, and I’m definitely not the first to write a post about a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon.
Yet here I am. Just because I want to convince everyone who isn’t convinced yet that if you can, you have to fly over that wonderous piece of nature.
Because we didn’t want to fly in bad weather, we decided not to book our flight in advance. We were of course well aware of the fact that that might mean that we weren’t going to be able to fly at all if everything was fully booked. But what’s life without a little risk, right?
After a first glimps (read: long impressed staring) at the canyon and the realisation that the weather was perfect for a helicopter flight, we drove back to the airport, hoping that we would be lucky.
And we were!
The biggest company flying from Grand Canyon Airport, Papillion, still had plenty of seats left. After a brief safety briefing and a short wait, we were assigned our places in the helicopter and up we went!
You can’t really grasp the grandeur of this national park and natural wonder unless you fly and keep flying and keep flying over it. It’s huge and so so so beautiful. When you’re standing on the rim at one of the viewpoints you just don’t see how far it stretches. You drive from one point to another, get a different view each time, but you never get the same feeling or see it the same way as from up in the air. It’s spectacular. You simply don’t know where to look first.
Our pilot offered us lots of information on the park and its history, but luckily also knew when to keep quiet so we could have a moment to take it all in. Because it’s a lot to take in. I’ve never felt so tiny and inignificant in my life. Nature is magnificent.
Pictures convince more than any word can, so I hope the above images did. Just know that no picture can capture the beauty of this canyon. You just have to see it for yourself.
The Grand Canyon airport isn’t the only option if you want to fly over the Grand Canyon. There are also many flights departing from Las Vegas. Those are a bit cheaper, probably because there is a bit more competition there.
For our 30 minute flight, we paid $199 dollars each. Okay, I admit, it is a lot of money, but it’s so worth it. Those dollars are an investment in an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life. It is that impressive.
